Ben Gurion TWR

Ben Gurion TWR

Ben Gurion Tower (LLBG_D_TWR) is responsible for LLBG’s runways, and for providing ATC service in the Ben Gurion Control Zone (BIKF CTR)

Runway Configuration

Preferred Runways

For the best traffic management, the preferred RWYs are 26 for Departures and 21 for Arrivals. Additionally, due to wind considerations, noise abatement, or notams, there may be RWY 26 for Departures and RWY 30 for arrivals.

Additionally, at night (for noise abatement) The preferred configuration shall be RWY 26 for Departures and RWY 12 for Arrivals

ATC shall use the following site when able to determine the Configurations and Active NOTAMS

*In the configuration of 26/21 The tower may split to LLBG_D_TWR and LLBG_A_TWR

Low Visibility Runways

In the situations where one or more of the following conditions apply

  • RVR below 800 meters
  • Visibility below 1200 meters

LVP procedures are in action, and the preferred configuration is RWY 26 for departures and RWY 21 for arrivals.
In the conditions that the RVR at the departure RWY is 350 meters at night or 400 meters during the daytime, takeoff clearance will be upon the pilot's request/discretion.

Ben Gurion Control Zone (LLBG CTR)

The LLBG CTR ranges from GND – 2000ft. It is located within the LLBG_TMA and has direct borders to the east and west with LLPT_CTR. There is a border to the south with LLPL and LLEK.

There are the following departures and arrivals to LLBG via CVFR

WAYPOINT Altitude Outbound Altitude Inbound
PARDS 1200 1200
NTAIM-MRSIN 1200 1200
NSHRM 1200 2000/1200
AYLON 2500 3000

Traffic Circuit

The standard traffic circuit for LLBG Outhbound of the airport (Right on RWY 26, etc.)

The standard circuit altitude is 1,200 ft for A and B category aircraft and 2,000 ft for category C and D aircraft.

HELI-CVFR

  1. East of the airport, there is a route above road number 6 for transing helicopter traffic (1200ft northbound and 900/800ft southbound). The route is controlled by the tower between "KESEM WEST" and "MAHLEF NESHARIM".
  2. West and south of the airport, there are 5 helipads, 4 of which are marked on the map, and the 5th is near the N appron ("BEDEK HELIPED"). The tower is not approved to give them landing clearance, but to give the wind and QNH of LLBG, and to ask the helicopter to report on the ground (no factor) and when airborne (separation factor)
  3. The helicopter inbound/outbound route is via NTAIM-MRSIN (800 outbound and 1200 inbound).

Missed Approach

TWR shall instruct the aircraft to follow the standard missed approach. If an aircraft is unable to fly the standard missed, TWR shall instruct them to climb on runway heading to 4000ft.

TWR shall coordinate all missed approaches with APP before transferring them to APP.

Next ATS Unit for Departures

Generally, all IFR departures should be transferred to Ben Gurion DEP (LLBG_D_APP), or whoever is covering it top-down.

For VFR departures toward LLHZ, they may be coordinated with LLBG_D_APP approval to send the departing aircraft to LLHZ_TWR.

Reduced Runway Separation Minima

The use of reduced runway separation minima (RRSM) is permitted at LLBG under the following conditions:

  1. RWY 26 is in use for departures, and RWY 12 is in use for arrivals
  2. Visibility of 5KM or more, cloud ceiling at 2000ft or greater.
  3. The departing plane is approved for one of the following departures
    1. SIDS: SUVAS\DAFNA\MERVA\TOMAL\SALAM\RIPUD
    2. Vectors in the range of 255 <->180<->120 (255-120 via south)
    3. VFR: NTAIM\NSHRM

When the conditions apply, the departing plane may be cleared for takeoff if the arriving plane will be at 5nm from the RWY 12 threshold when the departing plane crosses the RWY26/12 junction, and the departing plane shall remain on tower FREQ until there is vertical separation of 1000ft

*If the Arriving plane is from category Light and the departing plane is from category Heavy, there shall be another 6nm instead of 5nm

*If the Departing plane is departing via RIPUD or heading of 210-120 and the arriving plane is going around, the tower controller shall instruct the arriving traffic to climb 4000ft on runway heading.

Departure Release

Coordination with LLBG_D_APP

In the following case, approval may be needed for departing a plane:

  1. Go around
  2. Instruction of LLBG_D_APP for SAR (Stop automatic release)
  3. Change of RWY configuration
  4. Special RWY departure (for exmple in 26/21 departure from RWY30)
  5. Slow aircraft departure
  6. departure via NAT/RIPUD/PIDET

*In single RWY ops, the approval includes the line-up and not only the departure

**LLBG_APP may  activate at any time SAR or change to AR (automatic release)
